About
About the OFF Grid Journal
Practical self-reliance for the American household, written from projects that were built before they were written.
What the Journal is
The OFF Grid Journal publishes short, practical guides on emergency water, backup power, staying warm, food storage and household readiness. It is published by Green Wisdom, the company that publishes The Off-Grid Handbook by Garrett Dalton.
Each guide is built on one of the book's 75 projects. We say so on every page, and every guide links to the book.
Where the facts come from
Every number in a guide, from gallons per person to the distance between a generator and the house, comes from the Handbook or from a named public source. The safety-critical ones are checked against current guidance from agencies such as the CDC, EPA, FEMA and Ready.gov, USDA, the National Center for Home Food Preservation and the NFPA.
Each guide lists its sources at the bottom. If the book and the official guidance ever disagree, we follow the official guidance and say so.
What we will not do
- Publish an unsafe shortcut: generators run outdoors only, canning follows tested recipes, and work on house circuits goes to a licensed electrician.
- Invent statistics, quotes or reviews.
- Tell you a method is safe when the official guidance says it isn't.
The reader stories on the front page are illustrative stories based on the situations the book was written for. They are labeled as stories.
